Ten years ago, solid hardwood was the clear choice for any homeowner who could afford it. Today, engineered hardwood has closed the gap dramatically. Modern engineered products use 3–5mm real wood veneers over cross-ply plywood cores, delivering the same visual warmth and refinishability as solid wood — with significantly better dimensional stability.
Solid hardwood remains the gold standard for one key reason: it can be sanded and refinished more times over its lifetime. A ¾" solid floor can be refinished 5–7 times. Most engineered floors can be refinished 1–3 times depending on veneer thickness. If you're building a forever home and want a floor that improves with age over 50+ years, solid hardwood is still the answer.
For most homeowners, engineered hardwood now makes more sense. It can go over radiant heat systems, below grade, and in areas with humidity swings that would destroy solid wood. Wide-plank engineered floors (5"–9") are more stable than their solid counterparts. And the price gap has narrowed considerably.
For above-grade living areas in a stable climate: solid hardwood if budget allows. For everything else — basements, over radiant heat, wide planks, or humid climates — choose engineered. Either way, buy the thickest veneer you can afford and have it professionally installed.
